Did you know? Hot temperatures that are present during the summer can compromise the strength and stability of your driveway. Read on to find out how asphalt can be harmed by the sun’s rays and learn how to take better care of your driveway!

Heavy Loads on a Hot Summer Driveway

What does prolonged heat exposure do to my driveway?

The asphalt used to pave driveways contains bitumen, which is a mixture of hydrocarbons that is viscous and black in color. Dark hues like black absorb much more heat than light colors, and the bitumen in asphalt is very sensitive to the UV rays the sun produces. One of bitumen’s functions is to give elasticity to the asphalt, and UV rays from the sun create an oxidation reaction when met with pavement that hardens the bitumen and causes the asphalt to lose elasticity.

This loss of elasticity in your driveway can cause any of the following:

It’s important to note that not all of these problems occur solely due to hot temperatures and UV rays from the sun. Having heavy loads on your driveway, even for a short period of time, can cause dents, divots, and a wavy-texture in your asphalt when the pavement is in a weakened state due to the heat.

How do I avoid damage?

Since you can’t stop the sun from shining or temperatures from rising, let’s take a look at some options for properly caring for your driveway during the hot summer months:

  1. Park heavier vehicles in your garage or on the street whenever possible.
  2. Avoid storing large RVs in your driveway, and if you are able, find a more permanent storage location for these heavy vehicles during the summer months.
  3. Do not park multiple vehicles at a time on your driveway on very hot and sunny days.
  4. If you have a pool that needs to be filled, avoid having the immensely heavy water truck stationed on your driveway. Ask the service providers if they have extension hoses or other pieces of equipment that will allow them to fill your pool from further away.
