How to Prepare Your Driveway for Winter
Tuesday, October 2nd, 2018
Though winter is still about a month or two away, making sure your driveway is ready for the chill is very important. Proper preparation will help your driveway last longer and look its best for years to come, so here are a few ways to prepare your driveway for winter.
Make Sure Your Driveway is Clean
Dirt and debris tend to accumulate on the ground; it happens. However, before the snow comes, you’ll need to make sure all debris is cleared away. The weight of the snow can press down on accumulated debris and cause long-term damage to your driveway.
Use a power washer to clear your driveway before the snow comes for best results. You should also make sure to keep oil and grit to a minimum to reduce long-term damages.
Get the Right Materials
A lot of people use ice melt to keep their driveways from becoming dangerously slippery during the winter months. However, the type of ice melt you use matters. Try to find an ice melt with a calcium-base to keep the damage to a minimum.
However, please note that calcium-based ice melts can be very harmful to dogs and other pets. Calcium Magnesium Acetate may be a better fit, as it won’t harm dogs or your driveway.
You should also make sure you’re using the right tools. Avoid using chipped or sharp shovels to avoid cracking or chipping your asphalt.
Seal the Cracks
Cracks in your driveway are the most important thing you should address before any snow falls. When snow melts, the water can seep through cracks and sit. When the water freezes again, it expands and worsens said cracks. In fact, this process is what leads to potholes.
Before potholes can overtake your driveway, get those cracks sealed to protect your asphalt from catastrophe.

What Our Clients Say
Once again you have exceeded our expectations. The price was very reasonable (we did shop around) and professionalism was outstanding. Thanks for not trying to include add-on fees to make a higher profit and we are looking forward to working with you for many more years to come.
-M. Leo Storch Management
Mr Joseph was by far the most responsive of the three companies we contacted. He came to inspect or driveway on the date and time he promised, gave us a firm quote, and he and his crew arrived on the appointed day at the scheduled time. They edged and cleared the old surface, then laid the new asphalt with the edges tapered to align with our patio and sidewalk. When they were finished the new surface was truly beautiful (and functional).
