Severn is a large city located in eastern central Maryland, about forty miles northeast of Washington, DC. R. Sevier started a sawmill and powered it by water.

In the mid-19th century, the region was an important maritime center for shipping goods to the Annapolis area. The Annapolis and Baltimore Short Line Railroad, founded in 1880, crossed the Severn River on a timber trestle in the early 1890s. The railroad spurred industrial development and transformed the banks of Severn into suburban communities. The railroad ceased operations during World War II, but the railroad right of way still serves the community today as a bike path and recreational area.
